Softball opens season in Arizona

McGehee
The St. Kate's softball team traveled to Tucson, Arizona for spring break to start their season. The Wildcats lost their season opener 5-3 to North Central College (IL).

North Central scored first in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.

That was the score until the top of the fourth inning when Lisa Jacobs doubled and Jessi McGehee followed that up with a two-run homer to give St. Kate's a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats continued to threaten in the fourth. They had runners at second and third with only one out, but could not bring them around to score.

The next time up St. Kate's added to their lead. Andrea Boser led off the fifth inning with a triple as the Wildcats loaded the bases before McGehee plated Boser with a sacrifice fly.

St. Kate's continued to control the game until the bottom of the sixth inning. That is when a couple of North Central hits and a couple of St. Kate's errors allowed the Cardinals to put four runs on the board and pick up the 5-3 win.

Despite taking the loss, sophomore Kayla Bergerson (0-1) pitched strong for the Wildcats. In 6.0 innings of work she gave up 7 hits, 2 earned runs, and recorded 3 strikeouts.

The Wildcats offense had ten hits. McGehee went 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, Jessica Kniefel also picked up a pair of hits going 2-for-4. Unfortunately they also hit into three double plays and left eight runners on base.

The Wildcats continue their season opening play in Tucson all week long with 11 more games in the next six days.
